Cari lettori,

A project: international mobility of disabled university students. An online platform

Dear readers,

I would like to share with you a project, which aims to improve the   international mobility of undergraduate students with disabilities. In particular, my aim is to create an online platform which connects students with disabilities to delegates from the rectors of European universities, to the relevant resource centers for students with physical and learning disabilities, international mobility offices in universities and associations. In many cases, access to information is problematic for students with a disability, as it involves practical problems, among which a waste of time to find information that is not always accessible, difficulties in finding organizational logistic information that allows an undergraduate student with disabilities to organize and live their study abroad experience serenely. The problem of inaccessibility to information leads the disabled student to decide to forgo their study abroad experience or to embark on it without adequate information. In other word,s, I would like, thanks to the platform, to take the student by hand, from the choice phase of the University on the basis of their aspirations and their needs, to go on to the stage of the student’s enrollment. Moreover, the goal is to support the student with information throughout the university course, by creating together with the university a personal support plan based on the specific disability needs. In addition to this, it is important to provide practical aids, for instance, specially equipped lodgings for the disabled, or special transport vehicles. My project is aimed at avoiding bad surprises for the disabled prospective student, when they have to confront a foreign country where they have no references without the necessary both logistic and practical support. Every disabled student, under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, has the right to reasonable accommodation, and this means not only the right to an  accessible dwelling, but also the right to receive inclusive education, in other words, different procedures for university examinations, with different  duration and modalities, to enable the student to sit for university  examinations on an equal level as non-disabled persons. The project tends to encourage disabled students to study abroad. Certainly, if a disabled person does not have access to information about available aids, they will be discouraged from embarking on this important  experience for their university education. Also, I believe that the  connection is vital: the connection allows people to contact the relevant subjects who can provide support to the disabled, for example associations that can arrange the transfer from the airport to the residence booked by the disabled person. For the purpose of organizing the practical aspects, and to find the Master I was looking for, I spent two months. I would like to facilitate other students with disabilities and spare them my difficulties, by giving them access to the information I can  provide. Thanks to this, preparation times might be reduced. The  other goal of the project is to allow college students to undertake this experience in a serene and organized way in its essential aspects. My project is not just about the Italian universities, but also the European ones; it involves students coming in and out, in other words, Italian students with disabilities who want to study  abroad for a while, and disabled foreign students who want to have a period of Erasmus study in Italy. Finally, I would like to point out that there are some Italian Universities interested in cooperating. I already have five people working with me on the project, but they are not enough: so I am looking for young enthusiasts, knowledgeable IT people who can explain how to manage the platform and manage it themselves when needed. I am looking for foundations and private citizens prepared to invest on the project. Lastly, I need the help of a business consultant who can draw up the business plan, otherwise we cannot get started. This project benefits the community, as even the disabled can access different cultures, have a more open mind and  contribute more to society. It benefits the competent offices as it may lighten their work. Of course, direct beneficiaries are disabled students, with a considerable increase in self-esteem, since they can feel equal to the others and have a sensational experience, their mentality may become more open while the psychological and cultural barriers of disability are lowered. Obviously, the beneficiaries are also the universities, as they will  have a higher presence of foreign students. I thank you so much for the help and interest shown in my project.
